It is evident that Mr.Jone’s habits of risky behaviors such as smoking have resulted in physiological damage as seen in his history of infections, hypertension, bloody sputum, low WBC/RBC platelet counts, and high carcinoembryonic antigen levels, all of which are effects of cancer. COPD results from destruction and inflammation of the alveoli and bronchioles. Such “disruptions in cellular behavior lead to changes in organ and system function”(Banasik 2022, Pg.62). Tumors are a result of cellular adaptive responses such as hyperplasia, an increase in the number of cells, and/or dysplasia, “disorganized appearance of cells … of abnormal variations in size, shape, and arrangement” (Banasik 2022, Pg.67). Mr. Jones has been referred to a pathologist and oncologist to determine if the tumor is benign. His treatment and management includes further testing, and he may be prescribed medication to alleviate symptoms and advised to quit smoking.
